THE TOWN OF LE BLANC & SURROUNDING AREA

Le Blanc is an old market town alongside the Creuse River. It provides an excellent base not only for exploring the park but also for day trips into Loire. The local area is perfect for walking, cycling, fishing and bird watching (it is a haven for wildlife and is particularly popular with bird watchers as some 300 species of birds have been spotted within the park). There is also quad biking and horse riding available in the park and the theme park Futuroscope is within an hours drive.

Activities:

Fishing: The house is a fisherman’s dream and rests so close to the river that fishing from most rooms would probably be possible! A licence is required however to fish from lakes or rivers in France but this is fairly easy to come by. Tourist offices and other local services offer a 15 day permit that costs very little.

Walking: There are a large number of organised walks from 5 to 10 kilometres in the area, which are marked out individually with their respective colour codes. There are signs with painted arrows identifying the lengths of each circuit. Posters and maps of these are sold in the town halls (Maries) and tourist information centres.

Bathing: Bellebouche (pictured right), the beach in the heart of France is one of the most beautiful lakes of the Brenne. It has a hundred hectares of water with nine hundred meters of white sandy beach. There is safe bathing for young children and also fish ponds, nature trails, play parks and a snack bar/restaurant. Le Blanc also has an outside public swimming pool that is open during the main season.

Eating & Dining: The house has a barbeque area overlooking the river as well as an internal dining area. There are several supermarkets for provisions just outside the town and there are numerous “Caves” in the area, where you can taste and buy wine. There are also a number of markets in local towns and villages where you can buy fresh seasonal produce. The Le Blanc market is Wednesday and Saturdays. There are many restaurants in the area offering excellent food and wines at reasonable prices.
Further information:

In the upper part of the town is a modernized castle and the 17th-century Saint-Etienne. In the lower part is Saint-Genitour, which features a 13th-century nave and 15th-century aisles.

The old town lies on one side of the river and can be seen across the water from the house. It is the largest town within La Brenne regional nature park and has approximately 7000 inhabitants.
